I love teaching not to explain, but to get people talking.
My name is Ayomide. Friends call me Ayo. English is my first language, and I've been teaching it in Türkiye for years.
What struck me when I arrived was this: people here know English very well but cannot speak it. A student with five years of courses will beat me on a grammar test — then freeze in an ordinary conversation. The gap isn't knowledge. It's speaking practice.
I saw the same thing in kindergartens and primary schools. The child following a textbook gets bored; the child inside the game speaks. So I built my lessons around conversation rather than around a book.
Today I work with children and adults alike. Both taught me the same thing: people speak the moment they feel safe. My job is to build that safety.
What a good lesson means to me
The student talks, the teacher doesn't
If the teacher spoke most in a lesson, that lesson failed.
Something finishes every lesson
A student should leave able to say 'today I learned this'. Vague progress isn't progress.
Boredom stops learning
The moment attention goes, no language goes in. Rhythm and energy matter as much as the syllabus.
From Lagos to Ankara, and on from there
My own road ran from Nigeria to Türkiye. My students' roads run from here to London, Toronto and Sydney.
